To recognize the centrality of forgiveness within the Christian life.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about gentleness and justice.

Share with the children the full text of the next two Beatitudes.

Happy are those who forgive others,
God will forgive them.

Happy are those who seek no evil,
they shall see God.

Discuss forgiveness with the children.

• When have they given / received forgiveness?
• Is it easy to forgive?
• What happens if you don't forgive?
• Does it make you happy to bear a grudge?

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• write about their own experiences of forgiveness.
• read the parable of the Unforgiving Servant.
• offer forgiveness to those in the class who have offended them.
• devise a short play about forgiveness, based on their own experiences.
• interview a Christian about forgiveness.
