Aim

To consider in greater depth Christian dependancy on God.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about the Beatitudes. Inform the children that over the next four lessons, they shall be exploring the Beatitudes in greater depth, two at a time, and finding out why the people Jesus mentioned are happy.

Share with the children the full text of the first two Beatitudes.

Happy are those people who know they need God
They shall live in God‘s kingdom.

Happy are those who feel sad,
God will comfort them.

Discuss with children times in their lives when they may have needed God. What had happened to them? What did they do? Who helped them?

If appropriate, talk about times of loss. How did they cope with their loss?

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • think up ways to help someone who is feeling sad / coping with loss.
  • interview a Christian about needing God.
  • read the story of Jesus raising the widow's son. (Luke 7:11-17)
  • write a short paragraph entitled 'Why I do / don‘t need God.'
