Aim
To explore children's ideas about prayer.
Before the lesson prepare the story of Hannah and the birth and dedication of her son Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1-2:11).
Lesson
Begin lesson by sharing with children the story of Hannah up to the point at which her prayer is answered. In your sharing of the story, ask the children about their own experiences of prayer.
- Have they ever asked God for anything?
- What was it?
- Did they get what they asked for?
- If not, why not?
Complete the story. Ask the children to reflect on Hannah's feelings.
What type of prayer does she pray after she has given Samuel over to the care of Eli?
What would the children like to thank God for ?
Ask children to compose prayers of thanksgiving either individually, in groups or as a class.
Conclusion
Conclude lesson by sharing prayers with the class.
