Aim

To help children understand that everything and everyone, except God, is subject to change.

Before the lesson photocopy the necessary number of worksheets.

Lesson

Begin the lesson by exploring the concept of ageing with the children. What age are they now? Have they ever been a different age? On their next birthday will they be older or younger than they are now? Who is the oldest person they know? Who is the youngest person?

Ask them to complete the worksheet by doing three drawings of themselves

  1. as they are now.
  2. as they have been in the past
  3. as they will be in the future.

Alternatively, you can invite them to arrange images of people in their correct chronological order.

Ask them to comment on other changes they have observed in people, buildings, the environment. They should quickly notice that everything changes.

Christians believe that only God remains the same. He is therefore neither young nor old. Or perhaps He is both.

Discuss this idea with them.

If you are feeling sufficiently confident, you might wish to progress to the following ideas.

Because God remains the same, that means He has always existed.

Ask the children if there has been a time when they have not been around?

What about their parents? Their grandparents? Have they always existed?

What about the school building? The Earth? The sky?

Christians believe that in the very beginning of time, there was nothing - only God. There has never been a time when He did not exist.
