To understand and appreciate the Christian belief that God exists in human form in the person of Jesus.
Before the lesson familiarize yourself with the Bible stories below.
Lesson
Begin the lesson by reminding children of what was taught last week. How would they react if someone said that they were not real?
How do they know that they are real? Accept or challenge any ideas expressed.
We know we are real because we experience life. We touch, taste, see, smell and hear things around us. Using the worksheet, find out from the children their sensory preferences.
People called Christians believe God came to Earth as a person like themselves. Do any of the children know the name of this person whom Christians believe is also God?
His name is Jesus and like the children, He also touched, tasted, saw, smelt and heard things. For each of the five senses, share the appropriate story from Jesus' life.
- Touch - Healing of a blind man at Bethsaida (Mark 8:22-26)
- Smell - Anointed with perfume (Mark 14:3-9)
- Taste - Water into wine (John 2:1-11)
- Hearing - The Transfiguration (Luke 9:28-36)
- Sight - Feeding of the five thousand. (John 6:5-13)
Alternatively, you can unite all the senses in the sharing of Jesus' anointment with perfume.
- Touch - felt the perfume on head.
- Smell - smelt it.
- Taste - 'was at dinner'.
- Hearing - critical voices.
- Sight - love of woman.
