Ibrahim builds the Kaaba |
|---|---|
When Ibrahim grew to be a man, he left the city where he was born and went to live in the desert. He could no longer live amongst people who worshipped idols. Ibraham knew there was only one God - Allah, and it was Allah whom Ibrahim wanted to worship. One day, Allah ordered Ibrahim to build him a house. This wasn't going to be a place for Allah to live, because Ibrahim knew that Allah was everywhere. Instead the building was going to be a place where people could come to worship Allah. Ibrahim was helped to build Allah's house by his son, Ishmael. The father and son worked hard, but they received some special help. Once, Ibrahim asked Ishmael to pass him a stone. Ishmael turned to find one and saw an angel, reaching out to him with a large black stone. Ishmael took the stone from the angel and handed it to his father. Ibrahim gave the black stone a special place in the building. Finally, the building was finished. Ibrahim called it the Kaaba - the House of Allah. People came from all around to worship Allah at the Kaaba. But some people brought idols with them and placed them inside the Kaaba. On several occasions, Ibrahim and Ishmael had to clean the idols out of the Kaaba. Today, the Kaaba stands in the city of Mecca in the country of Saudi Arabia. It is much bigger now than when it was first built. It is covered with a beautiful black cloth. Millions of people from around the world, journey to Mecca to worship Allah at the Kaaba, particularly during one week in the year. On the first day of the week, they walk around the Kaaba seven times, kissing, touching or raising their arms towards the Black Stone as they pray. They also look at a big stone in the Kaaba which they believe have the footprints of Ibrahim on it from when he built the Kaaba. After the week, when the millions of people have returned to their own countries, the Kaaba is washed and a new black silk cloth is draped over it. |
