Lesson

Begin by discussing 'education'.

Why is education important? What does it mean to be educated? What are the children's opinions of the current educational system? How could it be improved? Do they value their education?

What about Religious Education? What are their opinions of that?

What about teachers? What makes a good one?

Inform the children that the Jewish faith places enormous value on education. Jewish priests are called rabbis (teachers). During the Shabbat service, the rabbi delivers a sermon on the Torah. The synagogue is also called the House of Study. From the age of five, many Jewish children attend religious classes on Sunday morning. Adults might also attend classes in the evening.

Do any of the children attend Sunday school? What do they do there? What are their opinions of it?

The children could plan a lesson on a subject of their choice to be delivered to either a small group or the whole class. You could select volunteers to prepare to teach about the tallit, the tephilin and the kippah in the next lesson.
