The Sefer Torah |
|---|---|
LessonBegin by revising briefly what was taught in the previous lesson, reminding them of the vocabulary: the Ark, the Ten Commandments, Jerusalem. Show them a picture of the Ark in a synagogue. What do they think this might be? What might be kept in it? Inform them that this is an Ark in a Jewish place of worship called a synagogue. Elicit their responses to any details, for example, the embroidered curtain, the decorations, the drawing of the tablets. The Ark is set in the eastern wall of the synagogue, facing Jerusalem. Why? The ark usually contains a number of Torah scrolls. Inform them that written on the scrolls are the five books of Moses, which correspond to the first five books of the Old Testament. These books contain many laws (including the ten commandments) and many stories. Can the children recall any of the stories from Genesis or Exodus. One of the ways in which Jews demonstrate their respect towards the Torah is by dressing it. Share with children the ornaments which are used to dress a Torah scroll. What is the significance of the crown and the bells? ActivityThe children could make a scroll and write on it their Ten Commandments or their favourite Old Testament story. |
