Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about the Shema. Explain that the Shema is so important to Jewish people that many families have copies of it all around their homes. They are placed in little boxes and nailed to the frames of all the doors, excluding the bathroom door.

Use artefacts, images and text to inform children about the mezuzah.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • make their own mezuzahs.
  • talk about ways of remembering things which are important to them.
  • write words which are important to them.
  • find out the other ways in which Jewish people remember the words of the Shema (tefillin).
