Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson. Jewish people believe that God is One. Most Jewish children say the phrase 'God is One' in a prayer which they say at bed time. This prayer, which is the most important prayer for Jews and the first one which they learn, is called the Shema.

Share with the children the opening words of the Shema.

Hear, O Israel,
The Lord is our God,
The Lord is One

(Explain that in the Shema, 'Israel' means all the Jews in the world.)

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • decorate the words of the Shema.
  • hear the Shema spoken in Hebrew.
  • write about their favourite / bedtime prayer.
  • find out the next part of the Shema.
