Aim

To appreciate the quality of Biblical poetry.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about David. As well as being a King, a soldier, a musician and a shepherd, David was also a poet. Many of his poems can be found in a book of the Bible called the Psalms.

Share with children the words of Psalm 57.

Discuss how David's mood changes. What brings about this change?

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • write about a time they were in despair. Who helped them?
  • read another of David's poems - Psalm 100.
  • select and decorate two contrasting passages from Psalm 57.
  • write a short commentary on either of the Psalms.
