Aim

To appreciate that the Bible contains historical material.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about the Bible. The first part of the Bible, The Old Testament, is a history of the Jewish people, beginning with Abraham. At first, Bible history is the history of Abraham's family. Later, the Bible concentrates on the history of the Kings of Israel. The most famous King was called David.

What do they know about David?

Share with children the story of how David became king (1 Samuel 16:1-13).

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • use a Bible index / dictionary to find out more about David's reign as king.
  • draw a family tree from Abraham to Joseph.
  • write a potted history of their lives so far.
