To begin to appreciate that the Bible contains many different literary genres.

Lesson

Inform children that this half term, they are going to be learning about the Bible. Find out what the children know about the Bible by having a 'brainstorm'.

Discuss what they have written.

Following discussion, inform children that the Bible is actually a collection of lots of different types of books. Can they suggest what types the Bible might include? (History, story, poetry, prophecy, letters, law, gospel, proverbs)

Distribute the diagram to the children.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• identify the different genre of each of the Bible extracts. (Answers are available.)
• sort a selection of books/titles by genre.
• talk to a Christian about the Bible.
• write a blurb / design a cover for the Bible noting all the different genres.
• write about their favourite type(s) of books.
