Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about God the Creator. Christians also believe that God is the Sustainer, keeping His creation going.

The Old Testament is full of stories which show God as the Sustainer. One of these stories which may not be so familiar to the children is the story of Elijah and the ravens (1 Kings 16:29-17:6).

Share the story with the children.

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• read the next instalment of the story, 1 Kings 17:7-24.
• write/talk about who or what keeps them going through difficult times.
• read the extract from Psalm 104.
