1. Jesus is condemned to death. Matthew 27:22-26
Pilate asked the crowd, "What shall I do with Jesus, the one called the Christ?" They all answered, "Kill him on a cross!" Pilate asked, "Why do you want to kill him? What wrong has he done?" But they shouted louder, "Kill him on a cross!" Pilate saw that he could do nothing about this, and a riot was starting. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. Then he said, "I am not guilty of this man's death. You are the ones who are causing it!" All the people answered, "Let the responsibility for his death fall on us and our children." Pilate told some of his soldiers to whip Jesus. Then he gave Jesus to the soldiers to be killed on a cross.
2. Jesus takes up his cross. Matthew 27:27-31
Pilate's soldiers took Jesus into the governor's palace. All the soldiers gathered around Jesus. They took off his clothes and put a red robe on him. Then the soldiers used thorny branches to make a crown. They put this crown of thorns on Jesus' head. They put a stick in his right hand. Then the soldiers bowed before Jesus and made fun of him. They said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" They spat on Jesus. Then they took his stick and hit him on the head many times. After they finished making fun of Jesus, the soldiers took off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led Jesus away to be killed on a cross.
5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the cross. Mark 15:21
There was a man from Cyrene coming from the fields to the city. The man was Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus. The soldiers forced Simon to carry the cross for Jesus.
8. Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem. Luke 23:27-29
A large crowd of people were following Jesus. Some of the women were sad and crying. But Jesus turned and said to them, "Women of Jerusalem do not cry for me. Cry for yourselves and for your children too! A time is coming when people will say, 'Happy are the women who cannot have children! Happy are the women who have no babies to nurse'."
10. Jesus is stripped of his clothes. John 19:23-24
The soldiers took Jesus' clothes. Each soldier got one part. They also took his long shirt. It was all one piece of cloth, woven from top to bottom. "We should not tear this into parts. We should throw dice to see who will get it." So the soldiers did this.
11. Jesus is nailed to the cross. Luke 23:32-34
There were also two criminals led out with Jesus to be killed. Jesus and the criminals were taken to a place called the Skull. There the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross. They also nailed the criminals to their crosses, one beside Jesus on the right and one beside Jesus on the left. Jesus said, "Father forgive them. They do not know what they are doing."
12. Jesus dies on the cross. Luke 23:44-46
It was about noon, and the whole land became dark until three o'clock in the afternoon. There was no sun! The curtain in the Temple was torn into two pieces. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, I give you my life." After Jesus said this, he died.
13. Jesus is taken down from the cross. Matthew 27:57-58
That evening a rich man named Joseph came to Jerusalem. He was a secret follower of Jesus from the town of Arimathea. Joseph went to Pilate and asked to have Jesus' body. Pilate gave orders for his soldiers to give the body to Joseph.
14. Jesus is laid in the tomb. John 19:40-42
Joseph and another man took Jesus' body and wrapped it with spices in pieces of linen cloth. (This is how Jewish people bury their dead.) In the place where Jesus was killed, there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb where no one had ever been buried. The men laid Jesus in that tomb because it was near, and the Jews were preparing to start Shabbat.
