This topic has been selected for the following reasons:

• A study of the Pilgrim's Progress affords greater opportunities to revise the most important aspects of the Christian Way of Life, while introducing complex issues such as evil, peace, justice and death.
• It should fit more comfortably with the Literacy Hour.
• Post-S.A.T.s Year 6 children require an extra focus for their work in school.

As part of this topic, I would strongly advise inviting a Christian into school to talk about their personal experience.

The research projects suggested in these lessons could be done either within the class or as homework.

In my opinion, the two most suitable versions of the Pilgrim's Progress for Key Stage 2 children are:

Go with Christian! by A. and L. Parry, published by Hunt and Thorpe (ISBN 1-85608-215-2)

The Dangerous Journey by A. Parry, published by Candle (ISBN 0-948902-96-5)

The Salvation Army School's Information Service produces a student study pack, which, though aimed at KS3 and 4 students could be adapted for use at Key Stage 2. Although not a Christian organization, Amnesty International draws widespread support from Christians of all denominations. The charity produces some excellent educational material for KS2, which can be ordered from their Youth and Schools Department on 020-7814 6200.
