Aim

To explore the idea of emotional baggage.
To revise Christian beliefs about the forgiveness of sin.

Preparation

Before the lesson prepare passage from the Pilgrim's Progress.
Prepare the script for the Guided Fantasy

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught about The Pilgrim's progress in the previous lesson. At the beginning of his journey, Christian is described as weighed down by a great burden.

What do the children think this symbolizes? Discuss.

Today, many people talk about the thoughts and feelings which weigh us down as 'emotional baggage'. Using the worksheet, children in groups are to list examples of 'emotional baggage'. A few are already given.

Following discussion, ask the children to reflect on the emotional baggage which might be weighing them down. Allow volunteers to share their thoughts with the rest of the class.

In the Pilgrim's Progress, Christian's baggage almost causes him to drown in the The Swamp of Sadness (Slough of Despond). What do the children think this symbolizes?

Luckily, Christian is rescued from the swamp by Help

Later, in the story, he is finally relieved of his baggage.

Share with children Christian's experience at the foot of the cross.

How do they interpret this event, in light of their previous lessons on Christian ideas about forgiveness?

How was Christian changed by his experience? Have the children ever had an experience like Christian's? Would they like to be relieved of their 'emotional baggage'.

Activity

Using the script provided, lead the children on a 'Guided Fantasy'.

Allow sufficient time at the end of the lesson for a debriefing.
