Aim

To begin to understand life as a journey. To reflect on own journey of life.

Lesson

Inform the children that this term, they are going to be thinking about life. As even the world's greatest thinkers and scientists are unable to say what life actually is, we can only consider what life is like.

According to Forrest Gump's mother, 'Life is like a box of chocolates'. Use this quotation to introduce a brainstorming sessions on the phrase 'Life is like...' Remind children that all suggestions are to be written down without comment or criticism.

Allow each group in turn to share their ideas with the rest of the class. With which metaphors do the children agree or disagree? Discuss.

Following discussion, inform the children that most religions tend to view life as a journey. Therefore, it is this metaphor which they shall be exploring this term.

In a moment of quiet, ask the children to recall the various stages of their journey through life so far. What have been the high points and the low points?

How could their journey be represented on paper? Invite suggestions.

Activity

Ask the children to draw their journey of life in any way they like.

Once complete, invite the children to share their journeys with a partner.

Conclusion

Conclude by asking the children to reflect on what their journey so far has taught them about life.
