Preparation

Before the lesson read Luke 12:22-31.
Read Jesus' Encounter with the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-26).

Lesson

Remind children of the different parts of Jesus' prayer recipe. Draw their attention to the fact when you use it, you have to jump from thinking about the future of the world to your immediate needs? Yet there is a connection.

What are our immediate needs?

Ask the children to list either individually or in groups, the things they believe they need in order to get through today - oxygen is a given example. Do not hesitate to challenge any luxuries such as shoes. They should come up with the bare minimum.

What about in order to survive into next year? Be more generous in your allowance of a source of heat etc. Use worksheet to record their final decisions.

Christians believe that in order to survive, people need very little indeed. Yet we all fill our houses, schools, church buildings, youth clubs with loads of useless stuff. Do the children agree or disagree?

What is the connection with the kingdom of God?

Share with children Jesus' encounter with the Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:16-30). Stress that if he had done what Jesus asked of him, he would have helped to put an end to a lot of suffering.

If the children were challenged by Jesus to sell everything they owned and give the money to the poor, could they do it?

In an attitude of stillness, ask the children to imagine laying all their possessions on the floor of their bedroom. They must set out everything they possess. Ask them to look at this collection of their worldy goods. How much of it do they really need? With the aid of a magic wand, invite the children to make some items disappear. These could include toys or clothes which they have outgrown etc. Encourage them to continue working through their possessions until finally they are left with only one precious object. The possession which they believe they can not live without. Zap it with the magic wand and watch it disappear.

Notes

Perhaps the children would like to organize a stall at one of the school fairs to sell the toys which they found little difficulty in making disappear.
