Aim

To explore Jesus' commandment for His followers to shine like lights.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about Jesus as the Light of the World. But not only did Jesus say that He was the light of the world, he also told His followers, "You are the light of the world".

Share with children the text of Matthew 5:14-16 and the extract from Paul's letter to the Ephesians 5:8-13

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • find out about people, including Christians, who have been shining examples to others.
  • write about a time when they have shined.
  • make a star and write on it 'a word of light', for example, truth, courage, joy, compassion, love, etc.
  • study the words of "This Little Light of Mine" or "Jesus Bids Us Shine".
