Aim

To become aware of the Old Testament prophecies surrounding the birth of Jesus.

Lesson

Review what was taught in the previous lesson about Advent. Can the children recall what each of the candles in the Advent crown represents?

One of the candles represents certain Old Testament prophets, whom Christians believe, foretell of the coming of Jesus. (If necessary remind children of the role of the prophet). One of these prophets is Isaiah, who lived a thousand years before the birth of Jesus.

Share with pupils, the prophecy of Isaiah.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • find out more about the Prophet Isaiah.
  • collect images, newspaper stories under the headings of 'Darkness' and 'Light'.
  • use the worksheet to record all the prophecies cited at the beginning of Matthew's Gospel. Answers are also available.
  • read the other Messianic prophecies in the book of Isaiah 53.
  • explore the text of Isaiah's prophecy as choral speaking.
