To reflect on the symbolic use of light in a variety of contexts.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about Divali. Hopefully, the children should be able to identify that light features prominently in the festival.

Inform children that light is often used symbolically, both within every day life and within religious traditions. Can they give examples? (Use resource sheet for those who can not)

Activity

Conduct a candle meditation (see notes). Invite children to record their responses, using the worksheet.

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• use their worksheet to write a poem on light
• design a Happy Divali using a light symbol
• compile a list of phrases which use light as a metaphor
