To explore concepts of the Church

Lesson

Begin by informing the children that this half-term they are going to be learning about the Church. Brainstorm the word 'church' to find out the extent of the children's knowledge and experience.

Following discussion, inform children that the Church is a community. Do any of the children know what 'community' means. Allow suggestions.

Tell them that community is about 'belonging'. Ask them to tell you where and to whom they belong before showing them either Rachel's web or your web of belonging.

Distribute the blank webs and ask children to complete them.

Once complete, invite the children to share their webs with the rest of the class.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• talk / write about their experiences of being part of a church.
• read the story about Community.
• use dictionaries, encyclopedias and other references to define further the word 'Church'.
• interview a Christian visitor about belonging to a Church.
