Aim

To become familiar with Jewish preparations for Pesach.

Lesson

Revise what was taught in the previous lesson about the Ten Plagues. God told Moses that the Jews were to remember the day He 'passed over' their homes with a yearly festival. Pesach falls in the spring and lasts seven days in Israel but eight in the rest of the world. Before celebrating the festival, Jewish families have to make preparations.

Use text, images and matzot (optional) to inform children about the preparations for Pesach.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • compare these preparations with Christian preparations for Lent
  • identify foods which contain 'chametz'
  • write about a time when they were 'puffed up with pride'
  • do some baking, with and without raising agent
  • write or find a definition of / or story about humility.
