To introduce the children to the background of the Exodus narrative.
To explore the character of Moses.

Lesson

Inform the children this half term they are going to be learning about the Jewish festival of Pesach, which in English is called 'Passover'. The festival celebrates the escape of the Jews from slavery in Egypt. Briefly paraphrase the first chapter of the Book of Exodus for the children. God chose someone to lead the Jews out of Egypt. His name was Moses.

Share with the children: Exodus 2:1-15

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• complete the worksheet on slavery.
• find out about child labour today.
• complete the first three boxes on the Moses worksheet. (Answers are available.)
• read the first chapter of Exodus for themselves.
• watch the relevant section of the Testament video.
• begin a Pesach frieze or zigzag book.
