One day Krishna was playing with his friends in the courtyard of the house. Yasoda, his mother, was busy cooking in the kitchen. Suddenly Balarama, Krishna's brother, rushed to her and said, "Mother, Mother, Krishna is eating mud."

She rushed to Krishna, caught hold of him and raised her hand to give him a slap. "You naughty boy! Why are you eating mud, when you can have any type of sweet you want?"

But Krishna protested. "Balarama is lying. I haven't eaten any mud. Look in my mouth if you don't believe me."

"Alright, open your mouth and let me have a look," said Yasoda.

Krishna opened his mouth. But what did Yasoda see?

Inside her son's little mouth, she saw the whole universe - the earth, heaven, sun, moon, stars and everything else. All the gods and goddesses were there. She saw herself also, examining the open mouth of her darling boy. She could not believe that within the mouth of her son such things could appear. Yet she was seeing them. She was struck with fear and wonder.

She took Krishna onto her lap and cuddled him. Immediately, she forgot what she had seen. She sent Krishna and Balarama out to play.
