1. Matsya - The Fish

When the world was flooded, Vishnu appeared as a gigantic fish and carried the first man to safety

2. Kurma - The Tortoise

When the sacred liquid of the gods was lost in another flood, Vishnu appeared as a tortoise. Taking a mountain on his back, he churned up the oceans and found, not only the sacred liquid, but lots of other treasures as well.

3. Varaha - The Wild Pig

When the evil demon, Hiranyaksha, had taken over the Earth, Vishnu appeared as a wild pig to attack him. Hiranyaksha was protected against all animals except pigs.

4. Narasimha - Half Man, Half Lion

When Hiranyaksha's evil twin brother took over the earth, Vishnu appeared as a cross between a man and a lion.

5. Vamana - The Dwarf

When the evil demon Bali took over the Earth, Vishnu appeared as a dwarf. He tricked Bali into giving the Earth back.

6. Parasurama - Rama with the Axe

When the army tried to take over the world, Vishnu appeared as a courageous priest. In twenty one battles against the army, he managed to kill all of them.

7. Rama of Ayodhya

Husband of Sita and hero of the Ramayana, one of the world's oldest and greatest adventure stories.

8. Krishna

The most popular avatar of Vishnu. He is worshipped by his followers as a child, a father, a friend and an elder brother as well as a flute-playing lover, husband and son.

9. The Buddha

Founder of Buddhism and a new type of meditation.

10. Kalki

Vishnu's tenth and last avatar is yet to come. When the end of the world is near, Vishnu will appear as Kalki, riding on a white horse and brandishing a sword. He will destroy the wicked and reward the good, in preparation for the renewal of creation.
