A hot, dry country

Ethiopia is a very hot, dry country. In 1985 thousands of people died in a terrible famine there. Christian Aid helped during the famine by giving food.

Growing food to eat

Ethiopian farmers want to grow their own food. Christian Aid partner organisations help them to find different kinds of crops to grow and to look after their land so that there will always be food to eat.

Addis Belaye works for the Freedom From Hunger Campaign (or FFHC). He says, 'Christian Aid gives us £50,000 every year for our work with farmers. They don't tell us what to spend it on. Local people decide how to use the money in their own villages.'

Not all of Christian Aid's partner organisations are Christian - FFHC isn't. Some are Hindu or Muslim and some don't have a religious faith. We care for the poorest groups of people, whoever they are and whatever they believe.

Christian Aid/Gideon Mendel

These children live in a village in Ethiopia. They've walked all the way from the market with these huge pumpkins. And they had to make sure that their sheep didn't run off. It was hard work, especially since they were at school all morning. But there will be pumpkin soup with maize bread when they get home!

Write a funny caption for this photo.
What do you think the children said to each other as they walked home?
What about the sheep?!
