Aim

To introduce Gandhi as a Hindu role model.
To introduce selflessness as a form of yoga.

Preparation

Before the lesson obtain an appropriate re-telling of Gandhi's life.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught about the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita in the previous lesson.

The story of the Mahabharata is about a war. Some people have also said that the Bhagavad Gita is also about a war - the one which goes on inside everybody.

Discuss this idea with the children, with reference to what was taught last term about the good and bad angels.

Hindus believe that the way to stop this war is by practising what is called 'yoga'. Have the children ever heard this word before? (At this point, the children will talk about and attempt to perform contortionist tricks. But it is important to inform them that the adoption of physical postures is only one way of practising yoga)

The word yoga actually means 'to join'. When Hindus practise 'yoga', they are trying to join the bit of Brahman which is inside them with the rest of Brahman.

Ask the children to consider what may have caused it to become separated?

Hindus believe that the cause is selfishness.

Ask the children to reflect on the last time they were selfish. What did they do? Why did they do it? How did it make them feel?

One way of practising yoga is to perform selfless actions. Can the children list examples of a selfless action, either from their own experience or from what they have read / seen on television.

A Hindu who is famous for his selfless actions was a man called Mohandas Gandhi.

Share with the children the story of Gandhi.

Following the story, ask the children to consider the ways in which Gandhi was 'selfless'.

Gandhi is known throughout the world today by the title which was given to him during his lifetime - 'Mahatma'. This title means 'Great Soul'.

Why do the children think he was given this title? (In recognition that he had 'joined' Brahman)

Conclusion

Conclude by encouraging children to perform at least one selfless action.

Teachers' Notes

Gandhi was very influenced by the Gita and the bhakti movement within Hinduism. He serves as a model for people of all faiths. There are numerous re-tellings of his life story, which might are suitable for KS2 children.

Showing excerpts from the Richard Attenborough film might also be of value.
