AimTo understand the significance of the OM symbol. PreparationBefore the lesson photocopy one worksheet for each child. LessonBegin by using the worksheet to discuss symbols. What do each of the symbols mean? Why do we use symbols? What about the last symbol on the page? Have they encountered the symbol (or anything like it) before? What do they think of it? Are there any elements within it which are familiar? Consider its three constituent parts? What do each of these look like? Inform the children that this is the Hindu symbol for Brahman. What can they remember about Brahman from the previous lesson? Hindus find it impossible to describe Brahman fully in words, so instead they use this symbol. It is called the OM symbol. It is sacred to Hindus. If necessary, draw the children's attention to the number 3 in the symbol. The number 3 is important for Hindus because they believe Brahman is responsible for three main things - making life, keeping life going and destroying life so that new life can begin. The OM symbol also has a sound. Hindus believe that it is very special. Play a recording of an OM chant (if available). Have the children ever encountered this sound before? What do they think of it? Hindus begin their prayers with this sound. They believe it helps them to 'tune into' Brahman. What sounds help the children to concentrate? ConclusionTo conclude lesson, children could create their own symbol to show what they believe about God and /or they could write about OM. |
