Aim

To understand that Jesus had feelings.

Preparation

Before the lesson photocopy one worksheet for each child and one resource sheet for each pair.

Lesson

Tell children that today they are going to be thinking about feelings. How are they feeling now? Can they tell you any other feelings they have experienced?

Note some of these on the board.

People mostly have reasons for feeling the way they do. Ask a number of children to explain what caused them to have the feelings they described.

Explain to the children that in the same way that feelings have causes, they also cause us to behave in certain ways. For example, what do we do when we are cold?

Invite the children to share with the class what their feelings 'made them do'?

Activity

Distribute the worksheet and ask the children to complete the upper half.

Discuss their responses. Do our feelings make us do things which we regret? If so, are we in charge of our feelings or are they in charge of us?

As well as being God, Jesus was also a human and therefore had feelings. But how did he cope with them?

Distribute the resource sheets. Having read and discussed each Bible passage, ask the children to complete the bottom half of their worksheets.

The children should arrive at the conclusion that Jesus was fully in charge of his feelings.

Conclusion

End lesson by asking the children to reflect on an occasion when their feelings 'got the better of them'. How do they think Jesus would have acted in that situation?
