To introduce the Christian belief in the concept of Incarnation.

Lesson

Begin by reviewing what was taught in the previous lesson about the Bible stories of Jesus' birth. What do the children think the writers of these stories were trying to say about Jesus?

Most Christians believe that the stories of Jesus' birth mean that Jesus was God in human form. This idea is impossible to fully understand. But one of the ways in which some Christians try to understand this idea better is through painting and studying special pictures of Jesus.

Share with children the Madonna and Child icon.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• create their own mother and child icons. (These do not have to represent Jesus and Mary.)
• interview a Christian visitor about the idea of Incarnation.
