Aim

To begin to be aware of the work of Christian charitable organizations.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about thankfulness.

What are the things in their lives for which the children are not thankful? Such things could include illnesses, accidents, losses, etc.

What about in the world? Responses could include poverty, hunger, war, pollution.

At Harvest, Christians not only thank God for all that He has given them, they also think about other people who have less to be thankful for. How is this concern reflected in the traditional Harvest service?

The concern of Christians for the less fortunate is not restricted to Harvest. All throughout the year, different Christian organizations work hard to improve the lives of people in poverty throughout the world.

Share information on Christian Aid with the children.

Activity

Following discussion, children could:

  • devise an event to raise money for Christian Aid or another charity
  • write a letter to other relief agencies requesting information
  • write a summary of the work of Christian Aid
  • do the quiz on Christian Aid (answers are available).
  • explore the Christian Aid web site for children at http://www.globalgang.org.uk.
