Aim

To understand that Harvest is a Christian festival of Thanksgiving.

Lesson

Review what was taught in the previous lesson about giving thanks. This half-term, includes the Christian Festival of Harvest. Harvest is a time of year when Christians say thank you to God. What do the children think Christians thank God for at Harvest? How do they express their thanks?

Use either a video, poster or service sheet to describe the Christian celebration of Harvest.

What do the children think of this celebration? Does it seem a bit out-of-date?

Activity

In groups, children can do one of the following

  • analyze the words of the Harvest hymn and prayer
  • describe a traditional Harvest celebration
  • devise a more up-to-date Harvest festival

Conclusion

To conclude, discuss the following quote: "The worst thing about not believing in God is that there is no-one to thank for the big things in life."
