The Sermon at Nazareth |
|---|---|
It was the Sabbath in Jesus' home town of Nazareth. As He always did, Jesus went to the service in the synagogue. The leader of the service brought Him the scroll of Isaiah to read aloud to the people. Jesus looked through it until he found the verses he wanted. Then he read: 'The Spirit of God is upon me. He has chosen me to tell His good news to the poor. He has sent me to set people free, to give sight to the blind, and to set free the ill-treated, to tell everyone that now is the time for friendship with God.' He rolled up the scroll and sat down. Everyone watched him, wondering what he would say about the reading. 'This day,' he told them, 'you have all seen this promise come true in front of your eyes. I am that man sent by God.' The people were amazed by Jesus' words and asked themselves, 'Isn't this Joseph's son?' Jesus continued speaking, telling them how God cared for non-Jews as well. When all the people in the synagogue heard these things, they became very angry. They got up and forced Jesus out of town. The town was built on a hill. They took Jesus to the edge of the hill and wanted to throw Him off. But Jesus walked through the crowd and went on His way. Adapted from Luke 4:1-30 |
