The Temptations of Jesus |
|---|---|
Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert. Jesus ate nothing for forty days and nights. After this, He was very hungry. The devil came to Jesus to tempt him. The devil said, "If you really are the Son of God, tell these rocks to become bread." Jesus answered, "The Torah says, 'A person does not live only by eating bread. But a person lives by everything that God says'." Then the devil took Jesus up to the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem. "If you really are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. You know that God will not allow you even to graze your foot, but will send angels to catch you." Jesus shook his head. "It also says in the Torah, 'Do not test God'." Now the devil was getting worried. But he still had one more chance. He led Jesus to the top of a very high mountain. He showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and all the great things that are in those kingdoms. The devil said, "If you just bow down and worship me, you can be king over all these kingdoms." "No!" Jesus said. "In the Torah it says, 'Worship God and God alone'. Now, leave me." So the devil left Jesus. And then some angels came to Jesus and helped him. |
