Aim

To introduce the character of Francis of Assisi as a follower of Jesus.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about the journeys of Paul and Barnabas. Paul and Barnabas helped to spread the story of Jesus into different countries. Soon there were followers of Jesus in countries like Turkey, Greece and Italy.

One famous follower of Jesus who lived in Italy over a thousand years after Paul visited there was a man called Francis.

Share with children the story of Francis.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

• research any other stories from the life of Francis
• look at a story book version of the life of Francis
• talk / write about an argument which they have had with their parents
• imagine what Francis told animals and birds about Jesus
• read Francis' sermon to the birds and to the Wolf of Gubbio
• find out about the Franciscan Order
