Aim

To explore further Christian beliefs about Jesus' death.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson. Ask the children to consider the question, 'Why did Jesus die?' He could have escaped or, as the Son of God, He could easily have prevented His death.

Most Christians believe that Jesus took the blame for all the wrong things everyone in the world has done. They believe He 'saved' them.

Share with the children the second extract from the book of Isaiah.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • talk / write about a time when they have taken the blame for someone else
  • read the story of Aslan's death from the new infant version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, illustrated by Christian Birmingham
  • interview a Christian about being 'saved'

Conclusion

Conclude by informing children that the name Jesus actually means 'God saves'.
