Aim

To introduce the children to the concept of the Trinity.

Lesson

Begin by reminding the children that last half term, they sought to answer the question, 'Who is Jesus?' Invite the children to answer this question, based on what was taught last term. (Hopefully, they will answer that Jesus was a Jewish rabbi and healer who lived at the time of the Romans.)

But, for Christians, Jesus is more than a rabbi and a healer, they believe that He is the Son of God. What do the children understand by this title?

In the Bible, there are many stories which seek to show that Jesus is the Son of God - the story of His birth, the story of Him, as a boy, in the Temple and the story of His baptism.

Share with children the story of Jesus' baptism.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • write about a time when they pleased their parents
  • look at images of the scene
  • read the story of the boy Jesus in the Temple. Compare the two stories and the different responses of Jesus' 'parents'
  • discuss the symbols on a Baptism Candle
  • use the symbols of God to introduce the concept of the Trinity.
