Aim

To introduce children to a story from the Torah.

Lesson

Begin by revising what was taught in the previous lesson about Shabbat as a day of rest. For all religious Jews, it is also another opportunity to hear and study the Torah at home and at the synagogue. During the Shabbat service at the synagogue, a portion of the Sefer Torah is read out. At this time of the year, Jewish people are studying the story of Jacob.

What can the children remember about the story of Jacob and the argument he had with his twin brother, Esau. On the night before he met up with Esau again, Jacob had a very strange experience.

Share with children the story of Jacob wrestling with God.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • find out more about the Shabbat service
  • write a short sermon about what the story teaches Jewish people about God
  • find out about the country of Israel
  • talk about the things with which they have struggled
  • find out about any other food which Jewish people don't eat
