Aim

To develop an understanding of ritual practice within Judaism.

Lesson

Begin by reviewing what was taught in the previous lesson about the Shema.

The Shema goes on to say that the words of the Torah must never be forgotten; they must be taught to their children, repeated at home and at work, tied to their arms and foreheads and written on their door posts.

How do the Jews carry out these last two commandments?

Use artefacts, images, video or text to inform children about the tefillin and mezuzah.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • design / decorate their own tefillin or mezuzah with their own text inside.
  • interview a Jewish visitor about the tefillin or mezuzah.
