Aim

To begin to consider the purpose and significance of certain commandments.

Lesson

Begin by reviewing what was taught in the previous lesson about the giving of the Torah.

The Torah, which means law or teaching, contains 613 rules covering almost every aspect of life including what to eat, what to wear, how to pray and when and where to celebrate. In fact, the Torah can be seen as God's Instruction Book for Jewish people.

Discuss the function of rules before sharing with the children the resource sheet.

Activity

Following discussion, groups of children could:

  • read and discuss one of the many Little Instruction Books currently on the market.
  • create their own Little Instruction Book.
  • find out about the tallit.
  • interview a Jewish person about the importance of rules.
