Preparing for Easter |
|---|---|
At Easter, Christians remember that Jesus died and rose again. It is such an important time for them that many Christians spend the six weeks before Easter getting ready. This is the same number of days that Jesus spent in the desert before he began teaching. This time of preparation is called Lent. The first day of Lent is called Ash Wednesday. On this day, many Christians go to Church and, to show that they are sorry for all the wrongs they have done, they have a cross drawn on their foreheads. These crosses are made by the priest using a finger dipped in ashes. The ashes come from burnt palm leaves. During Lent, some Christians give up rich food, like chocolate or cake. By doing this, they remember Jesus, who, during his time in the desert, ate nothing. As well as giving up certain foods, many Christians spend more time praying, reading the Bible and helping other people. |
