Through oral or written work, children could demonstrate their ability to:

  • retell the stories of Holy Week and Easter and identify some Christian beliefs and teachings, for example, Jesus rose from the dead. (L2, AT1a)
  • describe why Jesus' death and resurrection are important for Christians. (L3, AT1a)
  • identify the sharing of a special meal as a practice found both within Christianity and Judaism. (L2, AT1b)
  • identify a period of fasting / self-denial as a practice found both within Christianity (Lent) and Islam (Ramadan). (L2, AT1b)
  • describe how self-denial is exemplified in the season of Lent. (L3, AT1b)
  • describe how Christians celebrate Easter Sunday. (L3, AT1b)
  • suggest meanings in the symbols connected with Holy Week and Easter, e.g. the cross, the crucifix, hot cross buns, bread and wine. (L2, AT1c)
  • make links between the symbols, stories and beliefs connected with Holy Week and Easter. (L3, AT1c)
  • respond sensitively to the experiences and feelings of Christians during Lent and Easter. (L2, AT2a)
  • compare their own experiences of self-denial with those of others, identifying what influences them. (L3, AT2a)
  • realize that there are different interpretations of the events of Holy Week and Easter. (L2, AT2b)
  • compare their own ideas about the events of Holy Week and Easter to those of a Christian. (L3, AT2b)
  • respond sensitively to the concerns and values of Christians, as expressed through their observance of Lent.(L2, AT2c)
  • make links between their values and their behaviour, when reflecting upon the theme of self-denial. (L3, AT2c)
