Through oral or written work, children could demonstrate their ability to:

  • recount outlines of the stories of Hannukah, the Annunciation and the birth of Jesus. (L1, AT1a)
  • retell the story of Hannukah and identify Jewish beliefs about God, for example, God is active, God works miracles, God is caring. (L2, AT1a)
  • retell the story of the Annunciation and the birth of Christ and identify Christian beliefs about Jesus, for example, Jesus is the son of God. (L2, AT1a)
  • recognize that celebrations are a feature of the religious life. (L1, AT1b)
  • identify similarities between Hannukah and Advent / Christmas. (L2, AT1b)
  • recognize the words 'Hannukah' and 'Advent' and light as a religious symbol. (L1, AT1c)
  • suggest meanings behind some of the symbols that are featured in the celebration of Hannukah and Advent. (L2, AT1c)
  • identify times of celebration in their own lives. (L1, AT2a)
  • respond sensitively to others' experiences of celebration. (L2, AT2a)
  • identify the supernatural aspect of the stories of Hannukah and Christmas. (L1, AT2b)
  • realize that 'miracles' are open to different interpretations. (L2, AT2b)
  • identify the value of celebrations in their own lives. (L1, AT2c)
  • respond sensitively to the religious commitment of Jewish and Christian people. (L2, AT2c)
