Aim

To help children understand the Bible is greatly valued by Christians.
To become familiar with the parables of the Pearl and the Hidden Treasure.

Preparation

Before the lesson read parables (Matthew 13:44-46). Assemble range of objects.

Lesson

Begin lesson by asking children to arrange a group of objects (one of which should be a Bible) according to their value. Hopefully the conversation should help children understand that many items have a value far beyond their cost.

For many Christians, a copy of the Bible is worth much more than the price they may have paid for it? Why?

In the Bible, Jesus tells two stories about things of value. Christians call these stories The Parable of the Pearl of Great Worth and The Parable of the Hidden Treasure.

Share the parables with the children.

Christians believe that knowing God is the most valuable thing in their lives.

Activity

Ask the children to draw / write about some of the most valuable things in their lives.

Discuss the children's choices.

Conclusion

Conclude lesson by informing children that over the coming weeks, they will be thinking about a few more of the stories which Jesus told.
