Jacob was running away from his brother Esau. When it was almost dark, he came to a special holy place where he knew his brother wouldn't dare follow him and he would be safe to rest until morning. There were lots of stones there so Jacob chose a smooth, comfortable one for a pillow. He lay down feeling tired and soon fell fast asleep.

While he was sleeping, Jacob had a dream. In his dream, he saw some stairs, which led from his pillow up into the sky. There was a bright light shining on the stairway and climbing up and down the stairs were many, many angels. Then he dreamed that God was standing beside him telling him that wherever he went, God would be with him and would take care of him.
