Up a level

Good Shepherd The person who looks after sheep is called a shepherd. Being a shepherd was once a dangerous job. The shepherds had to protect the sheep from fierce wild animals like lions, bears and wolves. At night, shepherds used to keep their sheep in caves. Then the shepherd would lie down by the mouth of the cave to sleep. Every shepherd had a way of calling his flock which the sheep recognized. When the shepherd called, they came to him.

When Jesus was trying to explain to people who he was, he once said, 'I am the Good Shepherd'.

A good shepherd was someone who really cared for his sheep. He knew each and everyone of them. He led them to where the best grass grew and to watering holes, where they could drink. When wild animals or thieves came to kill or steal the sheep, he did not run away, but was prepared to risk his life for his flock.

Christians believe that Jesus knows and loves them. They trust Him and try to follow His teachings.
