AimTo begin to understand the ritual importance of food. PreparationBefore the lesson prepare music and food for shared meal LessonBegin by returning to the topic of family gatherings. At their family gatherings, is there food served? Discuss with children the different types of food which is served at different family occasions. You might discuss turkey at Christmas, cake at birthdays and burgers at barbeques. When many churches get together on a Sunday, they have special food and drink. Do any of the children know what they are? Do any of them know why Christians share bread and wine? If necessary, inform children that in sharing this special meal, Christians remember Jesus' death. The wine reminds them of his blood; the bread reminds them of his body. Christians believe that Jesus died to bring people closer to God. When they eat the bread and drink the wine, Christians feel close to Jesus and to each other. It is a very special and holy occasion. ConclusionConclude with a short 'communion' meal, using whatever food you feel appropriate. Try to create the right atmosphere by the use of music. During the meal, Christian children can be encouraged to remember Jesus. While children from other backgrounds, can be encouraged to think of people who are special to them. NotesThe communion meal should be an opportunity for children of all faiths to express themselves fearlessly within their class community. |
