Aim

To appreciate the joy of singing.
To begin to understand that Christians praise God by singing.

Preparation

Before the lesson prepare to teach songs featuring the phrase 'Allelulia'.

Lesson

Begin by discussing the topic of singing.

  • Do the children like singing or not?
  • When and where do they sing?
  • Which are their favourite songs?

Sing a selection. Is singing a feature of their family get togethers? When churches meet together on Sundays, they often sing. To whom do they sing? What are their songs about?

A word which appears in many Christian songs is the word 'Allelulia'. Have the children ever encountered this word before? Do they know what it means? If not, inform them it means 'Praise the Lord'. If possible, play children a recording of a song featuring the word 'Allelulia'.

Discuss the other words of the song, before teaching it to the children. You might wish to introduce hand clapping or percussion instruments.

Conclusion

Conclude lesson by informing children that many Christians also sing songs to God when they are by themselves.

Notes

The cassette tape which accompanies A Gift to the Child includes songs and choruses featuring the phrase 'Allelulia'.
